PAINTINGS FAQ’s & HOW TO FRAME AN OIL PAINTING
WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE FOR YOUR PAINTINGS?
I primarily paint with oils on either wood panels, stretched canvas primed with gesso, or on Arches oil paper. The wood panels are primed before gesso’ing, to avoid paint from absorbing into the wood.
TO FRAME, OR NOT TO FRAME, AN OIL PAINTING
Oil paintings on panels or stretched canvas do not need to be framed, the deep backing of the panel or canvase provide a neat and finished look. Oil paintings on paper should be framed, ideally with a 3” mat, and framed without glass.
DIY framing: to frame your oil painting that has depth to the canvas or panel (usually 1/2-7/8” deep), my favorite simple but elegant frame is the excellent quality Ampersand floater frame, also found on Amazon. If you prefer a traditional, simple wood frame with or without a mat, my favorite online, quality shop is Golden State.
Custom framing: Affordable custom framing and traditional styles can be found at Framebridge, or framing shop in your locale. I haven’t used Framebridge yet, but they are recommended by fellow artists.
Quality mats can be found on Amazon, Blick, and custom size mats on Matboard.com.
GICLEE FINE ART PRINTS
WHAT IS THE QUALITY OF YOUR PRINTS?
A limited number of my paintings are reproduced as Giclée prints, professionally printed in the U.S, and I personally manage the scanning, proofing, and quality control of all prints before offering to the public. This allows me to ensure that all prints have excellent quality, color, and detail, for a print that you’ll be pleased to have in your art collection. Prints are reproduced on a luxuriously thick, 100% cotton Hahnemühle paper, delivering vibrant color and detail. Giclée prints don’t fade or start looking dingy like inkjet prints, they are archival-quality, meaning they will stay true for well over 100 years.
Care Guidelines: Never hang any artwork where there is direct sunlight. To clean, use a light swipe of a feather duster over the print, if the print is not framed under UV or museum glass.
My Fine Art Prints with No Mat: Prints have a 1” border around the image.
My Fine Art Prints mounted with Single-Bevel Mat: Mats are beveled (angle-cut) and standard frame sizes to allow for placement into a standard-size frame.
My Fine Art Prints mounted on Wood Panels (coming soon!): Prints are lightly varnished with a transparent, matte UV, acrylic finish that protects the mounted print. The panels have a 3/4” deep profile, and can be easily hung on a wall with a simple frame nail, with or without a frame.
FRAMING GICLEE FINE ART PRINTS
I highly encourage a mat and frame for all prints. All of my prints are offered in standard mat and frame sizes to make this easy. A simple mat with a simple frame creates an affordable and elegant solution. White or off-white mats will showcase the artwork vs drawing attention to the mat if a color is used.
Non-glare UV glass is recommended to protect prints, but is not necessary as long as you keep the art clean and out of sun. A clean feather duster works well to dust. Never dust with a cloth, you need the feather weight of a duster.
Good quality, wood or metal frames and cut-to-size mats can be found on on Amazon, Blick, or Framebridge. Framebridge will customize your frame to a good degree of detail if you want that. Amazon and Blick also offer excellent, affordable floater frames. Search for Ampersand frames.
For affordable custom size mats, I highly recommend matboard.com.
